Norway has around 45 toll roads, 25 of which use electronic toll stations accessible to international visitors.
City Center Charges
Access to the city centers of some Norwegian cities is subject to a toll for cars.
Motorcycles are generally exempt from city toll charges. However, motorcyclists must pay at one toll facility —
Atlanterhavstunnelen (Atlantic Ocean Tunnel), which has separate tariff categories.
The Atlantic Ocean Tunnel is an underwater tunnel on Route 64 connecting the municipalities of Kristiansund and Averøy.
Payment Methods
Several payment options are available for toll roads in Norway.
Visitors Payment (for short-term visitors)
If you plan to stay in Norway for less than three months, the Visitors Payment system is recommended. It allows automatic toll payment.
- register your credit card (VISA or MasterCard) on the AutoPASS website;
- the agreement is valid for up to 3 months;
- no additional device is required;
- license plates are recorded automatically and charges are deducted from your account;
- pass through AutoPASS lanes without stopping;
- registration is possible in advance or within 14 days after the first toll passage.
AutoPASS for Ferries
Since January 1, 2019, the AutoPASS for Ferries system allows payment for selected ferry routes using an AutoPASS tag or ferry card.
Electronic AutoPASS System
Most Norwegian toll roads use the electronic AutoPASS system. Dedicated lanes are clearly marked.
In some cities, including Bergen and Tønsberg, fully automatic toll systems operate with no-stop traffic.
If no payment is made in advance, drivers can pay at the nearest fuel station or wait for an invoice by mail (including foreign drivers). Fully automated toll points without manual payment options are common, especially around Oslo.
Manual Payment
Drivers without AutoPASS or Visitors Payment must pay:
- at “Mynt/Coin” or “Manuell” lanes;
- at coin machines (Norwegian coins only);
- by credit card at most toll points.
In automated locations you may pass without stopping, but an invoice will be sent later.
Important
⚠️ Manual toll payments must be made immediately. Otherwise, a fine of NOK 300 applies.
